Understanding the barriers young people face — and why our response matters.
Every young person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Yet for too many, the barriers begin long before adulthood.
From the earliest years, circumstances outside a young person’s control can limit the opportunities they are offered and the confidence they carry into the world. Without the right support, talent goes unnoticed, potential goes unrealised, and communities lose the contribution of a generation.
We believe that with the right encouragement, access and guidance, every young person can build a future they are proud of.

Children eligible for free school meals in London are less likely to reach a good level of development by age five than children who are not eligible.
Sport is becoming one of the key pillars of our work. It is one of the most powerful ways to reach young people, because it teaches lessons that last far beyond the final whistle.
Mentoring is about more than advice — it is about showing a young person what is possible. Having trusted adults, coaches, teachers and mentors in their corner can transform how a young person sees themselves and their future.
Having someone who believes in you
Learning from adults who have walked similar paths
Building trust, respect and self-worth
Opening doors to new opportunities
Developing life skills beyond the classroom
Education is about far more than academic achievement. It equips young people with the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to make informed decisions, pursue meaningful careers and contribute positively to their communities. Yet many face barriers beyond the classroom — financial hardship, limited resources, low confidence and a lack of support. At the McMillan Family Trust, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and realise their potential.
Knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions
Skills for meaningful careers and independence
A chance to overcome financial and resource barriers
Support that builds self-belief and ambition
Workshops and enrichment that broaden horizons
When young people feel connected to their community, they are more likely to develop confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging. Positive relationships with mentors, coaches, teachers and local organisations provide encouragement, guidance and opportunities that can have a lifelong impact. Communities also play a vital role in creating safe spaces where young people can learn, participate and thrive. At the McMillan Family Trust, we believe lasting change happens when communities work together.
Confidence and resilience through belonging
Positive relationships with mentors, coaches and teachers
Safe spaces where young people can learn and thrive
Stronger support networks that last a lifetime
Opportunities to give back and shape the future
The McMillan Family Trust exists to remove barriers and create opportunities through sport, mentoring, education and personal development.
We work alongside young people to build confidence, develop skills and connect them with role models who can open doors they might never have known existed. By investing in young people today, we are helping build stronger, more hopeful communities for tomorrow.
Whether you donate, volunteer, or spread the word — every action creates a ripple of opportunity for a young person who deserves a chance to thrive.
